Amalfi Coast Filming Locations: Ripley, Equalizer

Few coastlines in the world have the cinematic density of the Amalfi Coast. In recent years two major international productions have chosen the same small village, Atrani, to tell very different stories — proof that this stretch of coast still draws Hollywood as much as it did in the Dolce Vita years.

Ripley (Netflix, 2024): Atrani as 1950s Amalfi Coast

Netflix’s Ripley, starring Andrew Scott and winner of two 2024 Emmys, chose Atrani to recreate the 1950s Amalfi Coast of Patricia Highsmith’s novel. It’s a different adaptation from The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) with Matt Damon, shot mainly around Venice instead: same book, two different coasts.

The Equalizer 3 (2023): Atrani becomes “Altamonte”

A year earlier, Antoine Fuqua had chosen the same village for The Equalizer 3, starring Denzel Washington. In the film Atrani is disguised as a fictional town, “Altamonte”: the production replaced the signs on almost every shop around the square, turning the real Ristorante Savò into the “Aminah’s Cafe” where the lead orders his tea every day.

Why Atrani specifically

At barely twenty hectares, Atrani is Italy’s smallest municipality by area: one little square, covered alleys, narrow staircases between the houses. It’s a few minutes’ walk from Amalfi, but far quieter — one of the reasons two different productions chose it within the space of a single year, over the better-known and busier Positano and Amalfi.

An itinerary along the coast

Atrani, Amalfi and Positano follow one another along the SS163, the classic scenic coast road: all three can be visited in a single day, by car or on the SITA buses, though summer traffic can stretch travel times considerably. Atrani in particular has no parking in its old town, which is entirely pedestrian.
