Letters to Juliet: Verona and Tuscany

Letters to Juliet (2010) is a romantic comedy that crosses two postcard Italies: Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, and the hills of Tuscany, among vineyards and wineries. A perfect itinerary for lovers of cinema and good wine.

The Verona of Juliet

The film starts at the famous House of Juliet, with its balcony and the wall covered in love letters. A detail that surprises many visitors: the balcony isn’t original to the 14th-century palace, but a 20th-century tourist addition. For the film, a fake brick wall was even built just for the letters scene — in real life, love notes are left in a small red postbox dedicated to “Juliet’s secretaries”. Verona remains an elegant, romantic city all the same, with the Arena, the squares and the medieval palaces.

The flavours of Verona

Count Lorenzo’s palace, played by Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero’s characters, is Villa Arvedi, a historic estate in the Veneto. Here the bistecca alla fiorentina, pici and red wines (Chianti, Brunello) reign.
