La Dolce Vita in Rome: Via Veneto

No street tells the story of cinema like Via Vittorio Veneto in Rome. In the 1960s, with Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, it became the symbol of glamour, paparazzi and Italian high society.

The heart of the “dolce vita”

Between elegant hotels and cafés facing the street, Via Veneto was the stage of the Rome that never slept. A little-known fact: the scenes set on the street were not filmed on the real one, but on a faithful reconstruction Fellini had built on Studio 5 at Cinecittà, so he could control every detail of lighting and extras. The real Via Veneto, though, remains the place that inspired it all: it’s here, in real late-1950s Rome, that the paparazzi phenomenon the film portrays was actually born.

The film’s most famous scene isn’t on Via Veneto

A common mix-up: the film’s most iconic scene, Anita Ekberg wading into the Trevi Fountain with Marcello Mastroianni, isn’t set on Via Veneto at all but at the Trevi Fountain, in another part of the historic center. Together, the two locations tell the two souls of Fellini’s Rome: the high-society world of the cafés, and the monumental, scenic Rome of its fountains.

What to see today along the street

Walking Via Veneto today you’ll still find historic hotels like the Excelsior, the famous Harry’s Bar (still open), and the climb up to Porta Pinciana leading into the gardens of Villa Borghese — a route that combines cinema, architecture and one of the most elegant corners of the capital.
