The Monster of Florence: Real Tuscany Locations

The Monster of Florence (Il Mostro, 2025), the Netflix miniseries directed by Stefano Sollima, brought renewed attention to one of the most discussed true crime cases in Italian history. Beyond the plot, the series is also a journey through the real Tuscany: most of it was filmed in and around Florence, in places you can actually visit.

Florence, historic center and outskirts

Many scenes were filmed in the heart of Florence, with streets and squares dressed to recreate the 1960s and ’70s: Piazza San Firenze, Via Ghibellina, Viale della Giovine Italia, Via del Proconsolo and Via dell’Anguillara. The former Court of Appeal in Piazza San Firenze was used for the trial scenes.

Montalcino and Sant’Angelo in Colle

Filming also moved to the Siena area, with stops in Montalcino and the nearby hamlet of Sant’Angelo in Colle — the heart of Brunello wine country, one of Italy’s most celebrated red wines.

Pisa, Siena and the Florentine Chianti

Other Tuscan locations include Lajatico and Terricciola (province of Pisa), the historic center of Siena, and several towns between Chianti and the Florence outskirts, including San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Mercatale Val di Pesa and Signa.

What (and where) to eat in this Tuscany

The hills around these locations are among Italy’s most famous food and wine regions:

• In Montalcino, Brunello DOCG, one of Italy’s great red wines;
• In Siena, panforte and pici, the local hand-rolled pasta;
• In the Florentine Chianti, bistecca alla fiorentina and local extra-virgin olive oil.
