Al Pacino's Bar Vitelli in Savoca, Sicily

When Francis Ford Coppola looked for a town for the Sicilian scenes of The Godfather (1971), the real Corleone had become too modern to pass for an early-20th-century village. So he chose Savoca, a village of just over 1,700 people perched on the mountains above Taormina. And in a small square of this town stands one of the most visited film locations in Italy: the Bar Vitelli.

The scene that made Bar Vitelli famous

This is where Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), in hiding in Sicily after the family war back in New York, asks the bar owner for permission to meet his daughter Apollonia. A scene written into cinema history, filmed right in front of this historic village bar, which has kept its old-world charm almost intact: vintage photographs, farming tools, and the vine-covered pergola where the scene still plays out for visitors today.

A curiosity: the name didn’t exist before the film

A detail that surprises many visitors: before 1971 the bar had no official name at all. It was Coppola himself who chose “Bar Vitelli” for the screenplay, and the owners at the time later decided to adopt it as the venue’s real name. The bar occupies the ground floor of Palazzo Trimarchi, a Sicilian neoclassical noble building constructed between the late 17th and early 18th century and restored in 1773 — so the location isn’t just cinematically authentic, it’s also a genuine piece of history.

What to taste

Bar Vitelli is famous above all for its Sicilian granita — lemon, almond, mulberry — served with a brioche col tuppo, the classic Sicilian summer breakfast ritual. Also worth trying are the local wine and small almond pastries. Sitting at its shaded tables under the pergola is a little journey back in time: much of the interior décor is the same seen in the film.

How to get to Savoca

Savoca is about 21 km (13 miles) from Taormina, a little over a 30-minute drive — the easiest way to get there. By public transport you’ll need a change: a bus from Taormina to Santa Teresa di Riva on the coast, then a local bus (Jonica Trasporti) up to Savoca, or a taxi for the final stretch if the timetables don’t line up.

What else to see

Besides the bar, it is worth climbing up to the Church of San Nicolò, where the film’s wedding of Michael and Apollonia is celebrated, and wandering the medieval alleys of the village — among the most beautiful in Italy — with views over the Ionian coast and, on clear days, Mount Etna.
